Global Unconventional Gas Summit 2012

The Global Unconventional Gas Summit 2012 (GUG2012) was held on November 6-8, 2012 at China World Summit Wing, Beijing. The summit was supported by China Energy Fund Committee (CEFC) and  co-organized by China Energy Research Society (CERS) and Gas Technology Institute (GTI). Yuan Zhongyi, Chief Officer of Beijing Office of CEFC, and Lee Yim Jeremy, Officer of Hong Kong Office of CEFC, attended the summit.

Yu Xinyang, Secretary-General of CERS, in his opening remarks, acknowledged the support of CEFC and other parties’ contributions. He was encouraged by the United States’ success in extracting shale gas. Chai Songyue, Chairman of CERS, noted that this summit has provided opportunities for unconventional gas extraction in China. He welcomed the introduction of new technologies and methods of management to China.

In this three-day summit, there were discussions on the prospect of shale gas extraction in China, regulations of unconventional gas, extraction techniques and other related issues. Over 300 Chinese and foreign experts attended the summit. Speakers included Zhang Yuqing, Deputy Administrator of National Energy Administration; Richard Jones, IEA Deputy Executive Director; Christopher Smith, US DOE Deputy Assistant Secretary; Li Junfeng, Director-general of National Climate Change Research Center and other experts.

Zhang Yuqing briefed the summit on China’s shale gas situation. He believed that the newly introduced incentives can attract more investment commitments to the industry. Richard Jones thought that there are abundant reserves of shale gas in China. He said shale gas extraction will affect global geopolitics and that it warrants international interest. Christopher Smith said China and the US have a common interest in the development of shale gas, and that he will encourage more US companies to expedite its development in China.
