19th Public Lecture on China

On March 8, 2013, Professor Tu Weiming,  Dean of the Peking University Institute of Higher Education in Humanities, was invited by China Energy Fund Committee  to deliver a public lecture on "Universal Values and the Diversity of Civilizations".  Professor Tu is widely acclaimed as a leader of the third generation of contemporary Confucianists.   His lecture drew  about 200 educationists, Chinese scholars, thinkers and other professionals  to  the venue, the Hong Kong Museum of History Lecture Hall in East Tsimshatsui.

Reflecting on history, Professor Tu cited classical works, accompanied by elaborations on academic Confucian concepts, to interpret Chinese culture and the challenges and opportunities of the Confucian tradition in a world of growing cultural diversity.  He identified some stimulating examples of basic Chinese values, eliciting   enthusiastic  responses from his  audience.

Professor  Tu especially emphasized the concept of "The Three Worlds of Significance of the Chinese Identity".

He went on to suggest that Chinese culture still not only enlightens Chinese people in Asia, but could also benefit overseas Chinese as well as foreigners interested in understanding China.  In particular, Professor Tu believes that the concepts of "virtue" and "sense of awe" in Confucianism could alleviate the egocentricity of  today’s modernism.

Following his presentation, there was a floor discussion during which a number of participants raised questions and expressed their thoughts.
